Garbine Muguruza v Alison Riske Head to Head
The head-to-head between Muguruza and Riske is tied at 2-2. The American stunned the Spaniard in their last meeting at the 2019 US Open first round.

Garbine Muguruza hasn’t been firing on all cylinders in 2022. With a 5-4 record for the year, Muguruza is now staring close towards a Top 10 exit. That would be a cruel way to throw away all the good work she produced in 2021, where she won three titles including the prestigious WTA Finals in Guadalajara.
Muguruza’s title defense at the Dubai Duty-Free Tennis Championships came to a screeching halt against Veronika Kudermetova last month. And a week later she lost to Jelena Ostapenko in the quarterfinals of Doha.
In comparison to last season at this stage, the Spaniard had already scooped double-digit match wins along with a title triumph in the Middle East. But the early quarter of 2022, has presented its own challenges to Muguruza who arrives to the North America hard-court swing still looking to reach peak level.
Muguruza is a two-time quarterfinalist at Indian Wells, although she was beaten right out fo the gate in last year’s edition by Ajla Tomljanovic.

Riske Wins Her Opener Against McNally
Alison Riske didn’t have the luxury of a bye in the first round as seeded players. Instead, she was slated to meet her compatriot Caty McNally in an all-American clash.
Riske hadn’t won a match outside Australian soil in 2022, but she changed that record for good as she demolished the 20-year-old qualifier, 6-0 6-3 in just 83 minutes to advance into the second round.
The 31-year-old veteran was a class above her countrywoman, especially in that first set which flew by in a flash. Riske secured three breaks of serve to take a commanding lead.
In the second set, all Riske needed to do was to attack McNally’s second serve at every opportunity. The younger American was extremely profligate, and in winning 29% second serve points, she gave the match away on a tea tray.
Muguruza v Riske Prediction and Tip
You cannot put a good player down for too long, and this narrative perfecty sums up Muguruza’s scenario. She has not been at her best in 2022, but if there was one player you would back to get her season back on track, it would be the Spaniard.
