Munar Eases Past Qualifiers

Since making it to the quarterfinals in the first tournament Munar played this year – the Melbourne Summer Set 1 – the Spaniard hasn’t quite been able to reproduce the kind of form that had seen him reach a career-best ranking of 52nd in the world.

A second round loss at Adelaide and an opening defeat at Australian Open followed soon after and even a shift to his favourite, clay court surface did not help Munar.

In the four clay court competitions he’s played since, Munar has won just three matches, including a first round loss at Rio.

Why is why, having reached a season-best ranking of 71st on the ATP charts, he has now fallen to 99th in the world forcing him to go through the qualifiers in this competition.

Two easy wins, both of which saw him lose just five games apiece, should give him some confidence coming into this tournament, especially against an unheralded 16-year-old but can he be as convincing as the first two qualifying wins?

Juncheng Hoping to Create Waves

Shang is a former world number one on the juniors circuit and made his ATP debut earlier this year when he was given a wildcard to feature at Rio Open.

And while he lost in the first round to Pedro Martinez, he showed enough spark in that defeat to merit another look.

Which is also probably why he got a wildcard into the qualifiers of this tournament at Indian Wells. And has he done well or what here, defeating both the higher-ranked and favoured opponents to make it to the main draw.

The 17-year-old, who had been playing in Futures events this year, overcame Francisco Cerundolo and Mats Moraing in the two matches here to set up this meeting against Munar.

And given how things have gone for his opponent this season, he might fancy himself a good chance of creating a few ripples in this one.

Munar v Juncheng Prediction and Tip

Munar might be a favourite here, starting out at 2/7 to win this but he would do well to not take Juncheng lightly. Expect Juncheng to win a set
