Elena Rybakina v Viktorija Golubic Head to Head

Rybakina won their only match at the Nanchang quarterfinal in 2019.

Rybakina Breezes Past Azarenka

No. 17 seed Elena Rybakina upset two-time champion and last year’s finalist Victoria Azarenka in the third round of the Indian Wells Open to become the first-ever Kazakh woman to reach the Round of 16 of the tournament.

While Azarenka double faulted eight times in the match, Rybakina didn’t double fault in the entire match, she also won 100% first serve points in the first set and won 11 of 15 first serve points in the second.

The 22-year-old Kazakh, ranked No. 20 in the world, was in complete control of the proceedings. She had eight break point opportunities in the match and converted one in each set to upset the 13th seed.

Rybakina, who kicked off the season by finishing runner-up at the Adelaide International, has struggled since then, having been affected by fatigue and illness in a couple of tournaments. But she seems to have recaptured her Adelaide form in Indian Wells, where she also defeated Belgium’s Alison Van Uytvanck 6-1, 7-5 in the second round on Saturday. With Monday’s win, Rybakina is now 9-3 for the season.

This is just the second time that the 2021 French Open quarterfinalist has reached this far at a WTA 1000 tournament, following a last eight finish in Wuhan in 2019. Can she reach another quarterfinal with a win on Tuesday?

Golubic Wins Back-to-Back Three-Setters

Viktorija Golubic has played 13 matches so far this year and nine of those have needed a third set. While the Swiss had a 2-5 record in deciding sets before the start of the tournament, she has now improved that to 4-5 after consecutive three-set wins in Indian Wells.

The 31st seed began the tournament with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 win over Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva in the second round on Sunday and then carved out another three-set victory in the third round, defeating Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in a thriller on Monday.

Ranked 51st in the world, Golubic converted five of 11 break points and saved eight of 14 to beat the 46th-ranked Paolini 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4) in a two-hour-and-33-minute contest.

A quarterfinalist at Wimbledon last year, this is the first time that she will be featuring in the fourth round of a WTA 1000 tournament.

Rybakina v Golubic Prediction and Tip

Rybakina will be the favourite in this contest. She is the more experienced of the two and also the higher ranked. Expect her to advance to the last eight.
