De Minaur Holds off Millman

Last year, Alex de Minaur produced his best-ever performance at a Masters 1000 tournament in Indian Wells, reaching the fourth round of the event. This year, he is one win away from matching his best. On Sunday, the Australian began his 2022 Indian Wells campaign with a straight sets win over compatriot John Millman in the second round.

Up a break early, De Minaur took a 5-3 lead in the first set, but couldn’t close it out as Millman came back to force the tiebreak. There were four minibreaks to start the tiebreak but then De Minaur raced away from the senior pro to take the first set in exactly 60 minutes.

The second set didn’t need a tiebreak but wasn’t easy either. De Minaur broke Millman to love in the sixth game to take a 4-2 lead but Millamn broke back immediately only to be broken again in the next game before the World No. 31 served out the set for a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 victory.

It’s been a decent year for the 23-year-old so far, who improved to 10-4 in 2022. He featured in the fourth round of the Australian Open and was a quarterfinalist in Rotterdam. Recently he won both his singles matches at the Davis Cup against Hungary.

Paul Upsets Zverev

World No. 39 Tommy Paul’s pretty good season got even better as the American recorded the biggest win of his career by beating World No. 3 Alexander Zverev in the second round on Sunday.

This was Paul’s fourth career top 10 win, and a second at Indian Wells. Last year, the fast-improving American had beaten then-No. 5 Andrey Rublev to reach the fourth round. That remains the only time he has reached the Round of 16 at a Masters 1000 tournament, and he will be aiming for a repeat on Tuesday.

Paul, who had beaten Mikhail Kukushkin 6-4, 6-4 in the opening round, needed two hours and 18 minutes to knock out the third seed 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2).

While Zverev hit five more winners than Paul’s 21, he also made six more unforced errors than the American’s 19. When it comes to break points, Paul saved three of five and converted three of seven. It was a neck-to-neck fight till the third set tiebreak, before Paul raced his level to run away with the tiebreak.

With the win, the 24-year-old is now 12-5 for the season. The 2021 Stockholm champion was a semifinalist in Delray Beach and a quarterfinalist in Adelaide-1, Adelaide-2 and Acapulco. The Australian Open is the only tournament where he didn’t make the last eight this year, falling in the second round.

De Minaur v Paul Prediction and Tip

De Minaur is the seeded player and also higher ranked but the Aussie will be wary of Paul’s form. Expect a good contest with the American edging past the Aussie.

Tip: Paul to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
