Petra Martic v Liudmila Samsonova Head to Head

Martic holds a 3-0 lead over Samsonova, beating her twice in 2021. They last met in Parma where Martic prevailed in straight sets.

Martic Stuns Raducanu

Former World No. 14 Petra Martic is starting to get back to her winning ways after months and months of erratic, inconsistent results. To put things in perspective, this marks the first time since the Italian Open 2021 that the Croat has won at least three matches in a tournament.

Of course, Martic is a formidable player who is capable of surprises; it’s just that she has been struggling with her form of late. Before coming to the valley, her tally stood at 2-4 with early exits in Monterrey, St. Petersburg, and Melbourne events.

Here at Indian Wells, the current #79 has made amends for it with some impressive results. She moved past Anna Bondar 7-5, 6-3 in the opener and followed it with a straight-set dismissal of the 19th seed Tamara Zidansek.

In the third round, the 31-year-old delivered one of the biggest wins by knocking out the 11th seed Emma Raducanu with 6-7(3), 6-4, 7-5.

Martic was a quarterfinalist here in 2018 and now finds herself one win away from reaching that stage again.

Samsonova, Hoping to Build on Recent Success

23-year-old Liudmila Samsonova is ranked World No. 32 at the moment – a career-best for her. She achieved this feat despite a lacklustre spell this season.

With the exception of a quarterfinal run in Adelaide 2, Samsonova fell in the opening rounds in Dubai, Doha, Melbourne Set 1, and the Australian Open. Most of these defeats came at the hands of lower-ranked players like Andrea Petkovic, Madison Keys, Harriet Dart, and Alize Cornet.

The number 28 seed had a decent spell last season when she won the Bett1Open – her first WTA title – and also reached the latter rounds in Luxembourg and Courmayeur. That said, she is still inexperienced to some extent and will benefit from more consistent performances.

Here in Tennis Paradise, Samsonova commenced her journey with a bye into round two. Since then, she has moved past Ann Li and Danka Kovinic.

Martic v Samsonova Prediction and Tip

Martic has the experience and some momentum; she will be confident after delivering some big wins over the seeded players. While she may be troubled by Samsonova, it shouldn’t be that difficult for the Croat to win this one.
