Simona Halep v Petra Martic Head to Head

Halep has a 2-1 lead over Martic. This is the second time they are meeting at the Indian Wells quarterfinal, the Romanian had won in three to reach the semifinals in 2018.

Halep Breezes Past Cirstea

2015 Indian Wells champion Simona Halep of Romania made quick work of compatriot Sorana Cirstea in the fourth round on Tuesday to win their first meeting in over 11 years and move into the last eight for the fifth time at Indian Wells.

The World No. 26 started strongly, breaking Cirstea thrice in the first set to wrap it up in just 33 minutes. The World No. 27 showed some resistance in the second set, breaking Halep in the very first game of the set, but the 23-time tour-level winner clawed her way back for a 6-1, 6-4 win in an hour and 22 minutes.

Halep saved four of five break points in the match and converted five of six.

The two-time Grand Slam champion, who lost in the third round at Indian Wells last year, has improved her 2022 record to 14-3. The 30-year-old had won her 23rd tour-level title in Melbourne in January and was a semifinalist in Dubai.

She began her Indian Wells challenge with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 win over Ekaterina Alexandrova, and then defeated America’s Cori Gauff 6-3, 6-4 in the Round of 32.

She has reached the semifinals thrice before. Can she make the final four a fourth time at Indian Wells?

Martic Motors Along

World No. 79 Petra Martic had brought a 2-4 record to the tournament but after four solid wins, the Croatian is now 6-4 for the season.

The 31-year-old’s latest success came over Liudmilla Samsonova in the fourth round at Indian Wells, as she beat the 28th seed 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 in an hour and 55 minutes.

It was a neck-to-neck first set with both players breaking each other once before Martic edged the tiebreak. She raised her game in the second, dropping just four points on her serve. While both held serve for the first eight games of the second set, Samsonova’s resistance ended in the ninth and Martic served out the match in the next game.

Martic had scored a stunning comeback win over U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu in the third round, beating the 11th seed 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 7-5 in two hours and 49 minutes. that was by far the most difficult round for her so far in the tournament. She had beaten Hungary’s Anna Bondár 7-5, 6-3 in the first round and 19th seed Tamara Zidansek of Slovenia 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) in the second round.

This is the second time she has reached the last eight in Indian Wells, having fallen at that stage in 2018. Can she make her semifinal debut this year?

Halep v Martic Prediction and Tip

Halep’s shown good form this year and the former World No. 1 looks a solid contender for the title. She will be a favourite against Martic. Expect her to advance to the semifinals.
