Nadal Extends Streak to 18-0

Rafael Nadal extended his unbeaten run to 18 matches this season as he held off a determined Reilly Opelka in the fourth round of the Indian Wells Masters.

Nadal’s start is the third longest on the tour since ATP tour records were introduced in 1990. Novak Djokovic went 41-0 in 2011 and then had a 26-0 start in 2020.

Hampered by a leg injury, Nadal had a bit of a tough time, but he still came through in straight sets, beating the 17th seed American 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-5). The 35-year-old, chasing his 92nd career title, improved to 57-10 at Indian Wells, where he has won three of his 36 Masters titles.

Nadal, who didn’t play much in 2021 due to COVID-19 and injury, has blossomed in 2022. He began the season by winning the Melbourne Summer Set title and then captured a record-breaking 21st Grand Slam title at the Australian Open. The Spaniard continued his dominance at Acapulco, winning his fourth title at the ATP 500 without dropping a set.

At Indian Wells, the World No. 4 began his campaign with a 6-2, 1-6, 7-6(7-3) win over Sebastian Korda in the Round of 64 and then beat Britain’s Dan Evans 7-5, 6-3 in the third round.

On Wednesday, Nadal was forced to play two tiebreaks. While neither was able to break in the first set, Nadal was broken in the fifth game of the second, but he got it back in the eighth game. He dominated both the tiebreaks and eventually won in two hours and 13 minutes.

Kyrgios Gets a Free Pass to Quarters

Nick Kyrgios, playing in just his second tournament this year, has moved into the quarterfinals without needing to take the court in the fourth round after his opponent, 10th seed Jannik Sinner announced retirement from the tournament due to an illness.

Kyrgios, who has breezed past his first three opponents, including the eighth seed Casper Ruud, is into the last eight of a tournament for the first time since winning his sixth ATP title in Washington in 2019.

This is also the second time that the 26-year-old Aussie is in the quarterfinals in Indian Wells having also reached that stage in 2017. The World No. 132 began his 2022 challenge in California with a 6-4, 6-0 drubbing of Argentina’s Sebastian Baez. In the second round, he defeated another Argentinian, Federico Delbonis, 6-2, 6-2.

Kyrgios continued his march forward in the tournament with a dominating 6-4, 6-4 victory over the eighth seed Ruud in the third round. The Aussie has not be broken once in the first four rounds and will take a lot of confidence into his ninth meeting with Nadal.

Nadal v Kyrgios Prediction and Tip

Nadal has been in red-hot form throughout the year so far, while Kyrgios has looked like a player to beat in this tournament. This rivalry has produced some gems in the past and this one is expected to be another cracking encounter. There will be questions about Nadal’s injury. Will he be able to continue winning through pain? He has already pulled out of Miami to better prepare for the clay season, so he will be giving his all—that’s how Nadal’s been throughout his career.

Expect this contest to go the distance with Nadal extending his unbeaten streak to 19 matches.
