Rafael Nadal v Taylor Fritz Head to Head

This will be the second meeting between both players. Nadal won their only encounter in straight sets in the finals of the 2020 Mexican Open in Acupulco.

Nadal Eyes Another Title

Aussie Open winner Rafael Nadal continued his unbeaten streak in 2022 and improved his record to 20-0 in an epic semi-final against Next Gen compatriot Carlos Alcaraz.

With both players coming in with a good record this season, it promised to be a battle of the generations and it did not fail to deliver.

Alcaraz was off to a scorcher breaking Nadal in the opening game and then holding off five break points to go up 2-0 in the first set. From 0-2, 0-30, Nadal upped the tempo winning four games in a row and going up 4-2. Although Alcaraz broke back, the senior Spaniard broke right back to take the set 6-4.

With gusty winds, serving seemed problematic in the second set, with neither playing managing to hold serve easily. Some long rallies and amazing points seemed to be par for the course in this set. After five consecutive breaks of serve, Alcaraz was finally able to hold and close the second set 6-4 and send the thriller into a decider after almost two hours.

The level of tennis remained high quality in the third set with Alcaraz having chances to go up but the wily Nadal never let go and at 3-4, the Alcaraz serve finally cracked enabling Nadal to close out an epic encounter for a spot in the final.

Fritz In First Masters 1000 Final

American Taylor Fritz had a good run here last year making the final four defeating Alexander Zverev enroute before losing out to runner-up Nikoloz Basilashvili.

It was a tight contest for Fritz to make the semis  here this year. He had to come from behind a few times against the likes of Aussie Alex de Minaur, Spain’s Jaume Munar and Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic.

Up against Andrey Rublev in the semis, Fritz was off the block with the early break serving well and hitting some big forehands. Rublev broke back and just when the Russian looked like getting control of the set to take it into the tiebreak, Fritz upped his level to take the set 7-5.

The second set continued similarly on serve with Rublev having his chances to break but unable to convert.

At 4-5 serving to stay in the match, a couple uncharacteristic unforced errors from the Russian put Fritz on the edge of a win and the American played two excellent points to seal the win and his place in a first ever Masters 1000 final.

Nadal v Fritz Prediction and Tip

A lot to look forward to with an American in a Masters 1000 final against an all-time icon. Expect a good contest but the experience and grit of Nadal will be tough to break at this stage.

Nadal to win his 37th Masters 1000 title in a deciding set.
