It’s been a tough few weeks for Ukrainian players and Marta Kostyuk is one of those players who has expressed her concern over the developments in her country and the plight of its people.
From calling for a ban on tennis in Russia to questioning the attitude of Russian players, Kostyuk has made some strong statements recently. And while Ukraine remains under attack, it’s become tough for its players like Kostyuk to stay focused on the game.
It will be interesting to see how she goes in Miami. Kostyuk beat Belgium’s Maryna Zanevska in a three-hour epic in the first round in Indian Wells but feel to another Belgian Elise Mertens in the next round in straight sets.
In Dubai and Qatar combined, she was 5-0 in qualifying rounds, but was dumped in the opening round of the main draw by Aryna Sabalenka and Anna Konjuh respectively.
Her best so far came at the Australian Open, where she won two matches in a row before falling to Paula Badosa in the third round.
The 19-year-old will be playing in Miami for the second time. She lost in the first round on debut last year. It will be hard for her to remain focused on her game with all that’s happening back in Ukraine, and that could lead to another early loss in Miami.

Van Uytvanck Looking For Another Good Start
Five-time tour-level champion Alison Van Uytvanck will begin her fourth Miami Open campaign on Tuesday. She brings a 5-7 season record to the tournament and has won her first round match in four of the six tournaments that she has featured in this year.
The Belgian, who has never gone past the second round in Miami, was a quarterfinalist at the Lyon Open this year. She also won her first round matches at the Australian Open, Qatar Open and the Indian Wells Open, but lost her opening rounds in Melbourne and St. Petersburg.
Last week at Indian Wells, the World no. 56 defeated Hungary’s Dalma Gálfi in the first round, but fell to Elena Rybakina in the next.
Last year, Van Uytvanck won the Astana Open title and also claimed a WTA 125k title in Limoges, France. She will be hoping to make an impressive start in Miami.
Kostyuk v Van Uytvanck Prediction and Tip
With off-court issues occupying Kostyuk’s mind, the Ukrainian may find the going tough in the first round against Van Uytvanck. Expect the Belgian to win and setup a second round meeting with 22nd seed Belinda Bencic.
