Rus Looking for Consistency

The Netherlands’ Arantxa Rus will be searching for consistency as she begins her sixth Miami Open campaign. In the previous five appearances, the 31-year-old made four first round exits and won her first match in Miami last year, beating Marie Bouzkova in the first round, only to fall to Maria Sakkari in the second.

Rus is 2-5 in the main draws this year. Her two victories came against Veronika Kudermetova in Qatar and Danka Kovinic in Lyon. Most recently, the World no. 75 featured at the Indian Wells Open, falling to American wild card Katie Volynets in the first round despite having taken a one-set lead.

A 27-time champion on the ITF Circuit and the 2008 Australian Open girl’s champion, Rus hasn’t had much success in singles at the senior level. She is yet to reach a tour-level final. However, she did make it to the finals of two WTA 125K  tournaments last year, finishing runner-up in Bol, Croatia and in Belgrade, Serbia (both clay court tournaments).

Watson Seeing a Constant Decline in Rankings

Heather Watson too has a 2-5 record in the main draws this year. The 29-year-old won her two matches against Egypt’s Mayar Sherif at the Australian Open and Germany’s Jule Niemeier in Monterrey.

Most recently Watson won her qualifying rounds at Indian Wells but fell to Tereza Martincová in the Round of 128.

Ranked 115th in the world, the former World No. 38 will be playing in Miami for the 11th time. Her best came in 2016, when she made it to the Round of 16. Since then she is 0-3 in the main draws.

A four-time champion on the tour, the briton’s last title came at the Mexican Open in 2020. She has struggled since then, finishing 2020 with a 10-9 record and 2021 with a woeful 8-17 record. 2022 hasn’t started well either but Watson will be keen to get back her lost touch and climb back the rankings.

She began the season as World no. 72 but a constant decline in form has seen her fall to 115. Her main focus will now be on breaking back into the top 100. Could she begin the climb back in Miami?

Rus v Watson Prediction and Tip

It’s a matchup between two struggling players, therefore, it should be an interesting one with both trying to find their touch. Watson’s experience at the top level should give her the edge. Expect the Briton to advance for a second round meeting with 15th seed Elina Svitolina.
