Pedro Martinez v Jan-Lennard Struff Head to Head

Struff won their only tour-level meeting at the U.S. Open in 2020. They also met once at a qualifying round in Barcelona, and that match was also won by the German.

Martinez Looking for First Win in Miami

Pedro Martinez has had a great start to the season, having captured his maiden ATP title in Santiago. That success has allowed him to break into the top 50 and he heads to Miami while sitting on a career-high ranking of 47.

With the European clay court season looming, the 24-year-old Spaniard will have plenty of opportunities to keep improving that ranking.

But what to expect from him in Miami, where he has a 0-1 record? While he is growing in confidence on his favourite surface, that is clay, he still struggles on hard courts and therefore, not much will be expected from him in Miami. A second round would be good, a third round would be a rare achievement. Martinez hasn’t won two matches in a row on hard courts this year, and succeeded in doing that on just two occasions last year.

He brings a 10-6 season record to Miami, which includes his win over Sebastian Baez in the final of the Chile Open. When it comes to hard courts, he is 3-3 this year and has a 3-0 record in the opening rounds on the surface. Most recently, he featured in the Indian Wells Open, where he beat Joao Sousa in the first round but fell to Cameron Norrie in the second.

If he advances, he will be facing the 27th seed Cristian Garin, who had beaten Martinez in five sets in the second round of the Australian Open.

Struff in Woeful Form

Jan-Lennard Struff has scored just one win this year at any level. That win came against John Isner at the ATP Cup. He is 1-7 on the tour and 1-8 overall, after suffering a loss in the first round of Phoenix Challenger last week.

The 31-year-old German reached his first-ever ATP final in Munich last year, finishing runner-up to Nikoloz Basilashvili. He also made it to the fourth round at Roland Garros and reached the semifinals in St. Petersburg. But come 2022, Struff has lost his form. He started well at the ATP Cup, winning against Isner and taking Denis Shapovalov to three sets before losing, but has failed to get going in any of the other tournaments.

He is on a a seven-match losing streak from all competitions, and would be desperate to get back to winning ways in what will be his sixth appearance in Miami.

Martinez v Struff Prediction and Tip

Struff has struggled to get going this year, and Martinez could pile more misery on the German. Expect the Spaniard to advance into the next round.
