Fabio Fognini v Taro Daniel Head to Head

Fognini has a 2-0 lead over the Japanese player.

After Breaking Italian Record, Fognini Will Look for More

World no. 34 Fabio Fognini made history in Indian Wells, after picking up his 392nd win that took him past former World No. 4 Adriano Panatta for the most wins by an Italian male in history.

Fognini had rallied to beat Pablo Andujar in the first round to break the Italian record. He, however, had to withdraw ahead of the second round match with Nikoloz Basilashvili due to an illness.

The 34-year-old will return to action on Friday in Miami, where he was a semifinalist in 2017. This is his 10th appearance in the tournament, where he has a 10-9 record. Like this year, he had a first-round bye last year as well, but Fognini went down to Sebastian Korda in the Round of 64.

Looking at current form, Fognini is 6-4 in 2022. He had a slow start down under, falling in the second round in Sydney and in the opening round at the Australian Open.

But he struck form at the South Ameican clay season, doing particularly well in Rio, where he made the semifinals in singles and won the title in doubles with Simone Bolelli. One of his three wins in Rio had come over the higher ranked Pablo Carreno Busta.

Eight wins away from becoming first Italian with 400 victories, he will be hoping to make a bright start in Miami.

Daniel Knocks Out Munar

For the fourth time this year, Japan’s Taro Daniel won the first round match of a tournament after coming through the qualifiers. The 29-year-old did that in Adelaide, the Australian Open and the Dubai Open, and has now done the same in Miami.

He had also qualified for Indian Wells, but lost his opening round match to Andy Murray, the player he had stunned en route the third round at the Melbourne major.

Ranked No. 106 in the world, Daniel defeated Spain’s Jaume Munar 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 45 minutes on Thursday. The Japanese withstood six aces during the match. He won 72% points on his first serve, and converted half of the six break points that he held during the match. Munar had just one breaking opportunity in the match, which the qualifier couldn’t save.

Daniel had moved into the main draw following qualifying round wins over Australia’s Max Purcell and the United States’ Bjorn Fratangelo. He is yet to win two consecutive main draw matches this season. Could that happen on Friday?

Fognini v Daniel Prediction and Tip

Despite Daniel’s solid performances this year, Fognini will be the favourite to win this contest. Expect the Italian to advance into the next round.
