It’s a first meeting between the two.

Opelka in Solid Form

World No. 18 Reilly Opelka has been in sensational form this year. The American picked up his third career title by beating Jenson Brooksby in the final in Dallas. He immediately followed the success with a run to a second consecutive final in Delray beach, but this time fell short of the title, going down fighting against Cameron Norrie.

Earlier, the big-serving Opelka had also made it to the semifinals in Sydney and most recently he made his way to the fourth round of the Indian Wells Open (his best ever performance in the tournament) but couldn’t go past Rafael Nadal.

In Miami, this is the 24-year-old’s third appearance. His previous two attempts saw him reach the third round in 2019 and the second round last year, but this year could be a different one for the 6’11” player who has been very consistent with his performances.

A finalist at the Canadian Masters last year, Opelka broke into the top 20 for the first time in his career in February. He reached a career-high of No. 17 but dropped a spot this week to No. 18. He can continue his move up the rankings with another solid showing in Miami.

Cerundolo Picks First Hard Court Win

Clay court specialist Francisco Cerundolo won his first tour-level match on hard court as the Argentine defeated Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor in the first round of the Miami Open.

The 23-year-old Cerundolo, who is coming off another decent south American clay season, improved his season record to 6-4. Ranked No. 103 in the world, the Argentine was a semifinalist in Rio and a quarterfinalist in Buenos Aires this season. Last year, he had reached his maiden ATP final in Buenos Aires.

Making his Masters 1000 debut in Miami on Thursday, Cerundolo was off to a great start as he knocked out the World No. 57, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 in two hours and 25 minutes. Cerundolo served seven aces but also double faulted seven times in the match. He converted four of 11 break points and saved seven of nine.
