Marin Cilic v Alexei Popyrin Head to Head
Popyrin stunned Cilic in their only meeting at the Singapore Open semifinal last year.

He began the season with back-to-back semifinal appearances in Adelaide and then continued his good form at the Australian Open, falling in the round of 16. He would reach anther quarterfinal in Doha, but a defeat to Karen Khachanov began a series of three consecutive losses for Marin Cilic.
The Croatian, ranked No. 23 in the world, fell to Jiri Vesely in the round of 32 in Dubai and to Miaomir Kecmanovic in the round of 64 in Indian Wells. But the losses weren’t one-sided wins for his opponents. Both Khachanov and Kecmanovic had to overcome a first-set deficit, while Vesely won in two tough sets.
Overall, the 20-time tour-level champion is 8-6 this year and will be making his 13th appearance in Miami. It’s not been a happy hunting tournament for him.
The 2014 U.S. Open champion has a 14-12 record in Miami. He has reached the last eight just once in 2012 and was knocked out in the fourth round by Andrey Rublev last year.

Popyrin Passes Musetti Test
Beaten by Lorenzo Musetti in the first round of the Phoenix Challenger last week, Alexei Popyrin had a tough task at hand in the opening round in Miami, but the World No. 92 was equal to his task as he ousted the Italian in straight sets to advance to the next round.
It’s been a tough year for the 22-year-old Aussie, who had come into the tournament with a 2-8 season record. But a solid display in the opening round would have done his confidence a world of good. Popyrin got the only break of the first set in the last game to seize the lead, but Musettti made a better start in the second set, breaking the Australian in the very first game. Popyrin however, got the break back in the eighth game.
He missed out on a couple of match point chances in the 12th game but ended Musetti’s resistance in the tiebreak to clinch a 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) win in an hour and 55 minutes.
Popyrin’s other two wins this year came against Stefano Travaglia in Melbourne and Nikoloz Basilashvili in Dubai.
Cilic v Popyrin Prediction and Tip
Popyrin will be happy with the tough win but his form has been dodgy this season. He can challenge but Cilic will be expected to win this contest and ease into the next round.
