Frances Tiafoe v Francisco Cerundolo Head to Head

Frances Tiafoe and Francisco Cerundolo have not played each other at any level before this.

Tiafoe Moves Past Juan Manuel Cerundolo

Frances Tiafoe stood in the way of a potential Cerundolo reunion on opposite sides of the net. The American took care of Juan Manuel, the 20-year-old and younger brother of Francisco, knocking him off in straight sets.

Tiafoe, whose record in Miami improves to 12-4, is into the fourth round for the fourth time after recording a 6-3 6-2 win over the younger Argentine. Seeded 28th this fortnight, Tiafoe looked laser-focused from the first point. Both players stayed on serve until the sixth game of the first set when the 24-year-old got his first break and went on to close out the set with minimal resistance.

The second set was more routine as Tiafoe established a double-break to go 4-0 up. The match was effectively over as a contest as the American preserved his energy for much more sterner tests to come.

Despite an indifferent start to the season which was largely affected by his elbow injury, Tiafoe is in much better shape now physically and has not shown any glaring weaknesses.

Cerundolo Stuns Monfils

It wasn’t all doom and gloom in the Cerundolo family. Juan Manuel’s failure was Francisco’s success. The older of the two brothers produced one of the most surprising results of the tournament so far after he eliminated 22nd seed Gael Monfils in straight sets.

The French veteran was not at the races and produced a lackluster display that was tepid from the opening game in which he survived a break point. That escape didn’t last long as the 23-year-old Argentinean broke in Monfils’ next service game to take a shock lead.

Playing the waiting game proved costly for Monfils who was unable to take the initiative of the rallies. The World No. 103 kept dictating the match, pinning the Frenchman behind the baseline and going for power and precision off his ground strokes.

Eventually, after bagging the first set, Francisco Cerundolo did not rest on his laurels. Instead, his self-belief went up a notch and the likelihood of an upset lingering on the horizon, he earned two service breaks towards the end of the second set.

Tiafoe v Cerundolo Prediction and Tip

Complacency proved a major drawback for Monfils. I expect Tiafoe to come out firing from the first point and halt Cerundolo’s dream run.

Tip: Tiafoe to win in straight sets: 1/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
