Sinner Knocks Out Kyrgios

Last year’s runner-up Jannik Sinner ended Nick Kyrgios’s run in the Round of 16 with a straight sets win on Tuesday.

The ninth seed Italian, who saved three match points against Emil Ruusuvuori in the second round and wiped off five match points against Pablo Carreno Busta in Round 3, raised his game in the fourth round against World No. 102 Kyrgios, who had looked good in the tournament until a major meltdown in the fourth round match, which eventually cost him the match.

The Aussie, who is known to lose his cool during matches, was given a point penalty in the first set tiebreak for “unsportsmanlike conduct”, which eventually cost him the set. Angered by the incident he kept arguing with the chair umpire and even smashed his racket on court several times. He was handed a game penalty, which actually meant Sinner had a break advantage in the second. The Italian, however, stayed focused on the job and remained solid through the set, getting one more break in the last game to seal the contest 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.

The win was an easier one for the World No. 11 who wasn’t broken in the fourth round match. His first two matches were very close affairs stretching him to the limit, yet he came out on top on both the occasions showing nerves of steel. Sinner defeated Ruusuvuori 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6) in the second round and then survived a scare against Carreno Busta, edging past the Spaniard with a 5-7, 7-5, 7-5.

With the victory, the 20-year-old improved to 16-2 this season. The five-time tour-level champion was also a quarterfinalist at the Australian Open and the Dubai International this year.

He will be looking to reach his first semifinal of the season. Last year, he reached his only Masters 1000 final in Miami, falling to Hurkacz in the final.

Cerundolo’s Dream Run Continues

Francisco Cerundolo had come into the tournament having never won a tour-level match on hard courts. However, the 23-year-old Argentine has played sensational tennis over the last few days, earning his first four tour-level hard court wins and making it to the quarterfinals.

His latest win came over America’s Frances Tiafoe in the fourth round on Tuesday. Tiafoe had beaten Cerundolo’s brother Juan Manuel in the third round, so it was a revenge of sorts for the World No. 103, who is playing in an ATP 1000 event for the first time in his career.

Cerundolo outlasted Tiafoe 6-7 (2-7), 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 in a close to two-and-a-half hour physical battle, which saw the American struggle with a back injury.

Cerundolo, who made his ATP 500 semifinal debut in Rio earlier this year, had begun the tournament with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 win over Tallon Griekspoor. He then knocked out Reilly Opelka, who retired while trailing 1-6, 1-3 during the second round match. The Argentine then pulled off another missive upset, outplaying Gael Monfils 6-2, 6-3.

Can he keep his stunning run going?

Sinner v Cerundolo Prediction and Tip

Sinner will be the favourite but he will be wary of Cerundolo’s current form and his ability to knock out favourites. Expect this to be a good contest, with the Italian coming out on top.
