Steve Johnson v Denis Kudla Head to Head

The pair have played each other three times before, and Kudla leads their head to head series by two matches to one.

Johnson won their first match in this very tournament eight years ago, but Kudla won their two subsequent matches at the Australian Open in 2018, and on the grass of Newport Beach last year.

Johnson Spared Qualifying in Houston

This meeting is a role reversal for Johnson. In recent years, when these two Americans have met, it was always he who was the higher ranked of the pair.

It is a mark of how his form has dipped that the man who finished 2018 ranked as high as 33 in the world now finds himself outside the top 100.

One consequence is that he often now finds himself having to qualify for events where he would once have received automatic entrance into the main draw. And that explains why he failed to progress in Miami, losing to Jack Sock in the second round of qualifying.

A wildcard in Indian Wells means that he managed to avoid such a fate there, and he took advantage by reaching the third round, his best result since Washington last year, before losing to the Pole Hubert Hurkasz.

He has been spared the rigours of qualifying in Houston.

Kudla Playing Himself into Form

Kudla had his own struggles with form in the early part of the season, and suffered a string of first round defeats.

But, having failed to qualify for Indian Wells, he took the decision to enter the Challenger tournament in Phoenix and won it, his tenth success at that level, beating the German Daniel Altmaier in the final.

That gave him such needed self-belief because he then travelled to Florida, and came through two rounds of qualifying to make the main draw in Miami.

He consequently beat Juncheng Shang of China and then Lorenzo Sonego of Italy, the world number 21, both in three sets, before he lost another three set match, to the Australian Open Doubles Champion, Thanasi Kokkinakis.

The American was by no means disgraced, however, and was just edged out in a third set tie-break.

Johnson v Kudla Prediction and Tip
