Shaky Tennis from Davidovich Fokina

The Spaniard played a fairly decent 2021 campaign that saw him solidify himself as a very good tennis player among the sport’s elite. His 2022 campaign should have been a proper breakout one ye the Spaniard still hasn’t found the consistency needed for such a thing.

He has a 4-8 record on the year and generally, it’s been quite poor from him despite some promising matches. Consistency is the biggest issue for him as he is capable of playing strong tennis but sometimes he’s just abysmal. You never quite know what you are going to get but generally, he plays better on clay.

That is good news for him and his fans as the season will be red-dirt dominated for the next two months and Fokina should see his win total increase significantly over that span. Beginning that journey is a first-round match against Coria in Marrakech.

Clay’s the Game for Coria

Federico Coria is a clay-court specialist and playing on the surface is natural for him having grown up on it. His play outside of clay is okay at best but during this North American stretch, he showed some improvement. Nonetheless, he will be glad to be back on the red dirt once more where he can fully shine.

Coria has a 6-7 record on the year but he posted a 39-20 record on clay last year. That is very promising for the Argentinian who hopes to elevate his ranking into the top 50 (currently 60) and a good run in Marrakech might just do it.

His game is well suited for clay as he has a solid serve and a decent forehand. He is quite quick and moves well on the surface which makes him a nuisance to play. He generally beats players worse than him but finds trouble beating better players than him.

Davidovich Fokina v Coria Prediction and Tip

On paper, this is a fairly close matchup. Both play their best tennis on clay but there are some things to remember. Davidovich Fokina has the higher ceiling and his best is far better than that of Coria. However, his best hasn’t been seen in almost half a year as the Spaniard rarely strings together strong showings lately.

Whether a switch to clay changes that remains to be seen but it’s expected that his form improves at least by a little. Facing Coria in the first round will be tough for him as the Argentinian has been rather solid this year. He will need to play well to defeat and I’m not sure if I’m comfortable backing him to do that.

I think this will be a close match and I think it will go the distance. So the most logical thing to play here would be an over on games but if you’re not comfortable with that I’m slightly leaning Coria. He’s just been more solid in the past month or so.

Tip: Coria to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
