More than three months into the season and Haddad Maia has finally gotten her chance to prove her credentials on clay.
Because the Brazilian player has proven a lot of her other tennis credentials having gone from being ranked 1342nd in the world less than two years ago to her current ranking of 59th.
Even this season, Haddad Maia was 88th on the WTA charts in the second week of the year but then quickly crept up 30 places to get to her career-best of 58th.
And it has been down to her strong showing at Australian Open where she managed a second round place, and at Monterrey Open where Haddad Maia finished up a semifinalist.
Her best showing, however, came last week in Miami where she reached the third round on the back of a shock win over Maria Sakkari. Despite going into the match as a 7/2 underdog and then losing the first set, Haddad Maia went on to upset the Greek player and get to the round of 32.

Luca Jani Doing Well on ITF Clay
Luca Jani hasn’t played in any WTA competitions this season on clay and the only attempt she did make to play at that level in hard court tournaments ended up with first round qualifying losses.
The Hungarian, however, has performed well on the ITF circuit this season, having added a 24th ITF title to her kitty when she lifted the Antalya 7 trophy late in February.
She enters this tournament on the back of a couple of underwhelming performances though. At Anapoima, Luca Jani fell in the quarterfinal stage while at Medellin she won her opener before losing the very next encounter.
