David Goffin b Damir Dzumhur Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before at the Australian Open in 2016, Goffin winning their second round match in four sets.

Goffin Enduring a Tough Spell

It has been a tough 15 months for Goffin.

A man who spent the best part of seven years in and around the top 20 has seen his ranking fall, and continue to plummet.

As a result, in tournaments where once he would have been among the top seeds, he finds himself struggling some time to get past the first round.

His best result of the year so far came right back in January, when he reached the quarter-finals in Sydney.

Since then, it has been a series of early exists from tournaments, except when he made a rare sortie onto the Challenger tour and reached the last eight in Phoenix.

He was last in action in Miami, where he was beaten in the second round by Roberto Carballes-Baena.

His only senior victory in a clay court event was back in 2013 in Kitzbuhel.

Dzumhur Saves Match Points in Qualifying

Like Goffin, Dzumhur was once among the elite of the sport, reaching as high as 23 in the world and winning three senior ATP titles, the most recent of which was the Antalya Open in 2018.

But having reached four quarter-finals the following year, he has suffered a prolonged and sustained loss of form, and his ranking now reflects that.

Prior to Morocco, the Bosnian’s best result in 2022 had come in Montpellier, where he came through qualifying, to make the quarter finals before losing to the Serb Filip Krajinoviic.

He again had to settle for the rigours of the qualifying competition in Casablanca, where he began with a  comfortable straight sets win over the Moroccan Lamine Ouahab.

His second round opponent, Andrea Vavassori of Italy, the world number 242, presented a much stiffer challenge, especially when he took the first set.

Dzumhur twice went a break down in the second set, but recovered each time, but then had to save to match points. Having done so, he broke Vavassori next game and was able to level the match.

Again he was the first to drop his serve in the third, but he got the break back, and one more break enabled him to finally put the match to bed.

Gofin v Dzumhur Prediction and Tip

This is a match between two players who have both known better times on tour. Goffin, though, is the higher ranked player and that should count for something.
