Anisimova Hoping to Stall Poor Form

Since making it to the fourth round at Australian Open, Anisimova had won just two and lost four of the matches she had played in at the highest level.

Which is why, a straight-set win in the first round win here in Charleston would have been bit of a relief. That it came against the now-244th-ranked Sachia Vickery who was 7/1 underdog going into the encounter might say something but Anisimova will look to build on that.

The American won 6-0, 7-5, in a match that went on for just an hour and 19 minutes. There were three breaks of serves for Anisimova in both sets, but she did drop her own serve twice in the second, falling behind on serve on both those occasions.

In the end, it was Anisimova’s better first serve that shone through as the world number 47 won 71% of those points as compared to just 45% that her opponent won. Can she now put up a similar showing against Putintseva?

Putintseva Pushed by Anderson

She has never been ranked at better than 159th in the world but Robin Anderson did manage to push Putintseva in their opener before the Kazakh came through in straight sets.

Putintseva won 6-2, 7-6 (9) after saving two set-points in the second set, and then missing three match-points of her own in the process.

Things looked to be going to plan for Putintseva as she broke her opponent twice to take a 5-1 lead in the opening set, and then repeated the showing in the second with a 4-1 lead. Curiously, however, her game fell away after that and she was on the verge of getting broken thrice.

Pushing it into the tie-breaker, Putintseva regained some of her composure and rushed to go 4-1 up and then had a match-point at 6-5, before closing it out 11-9.

Can she shrug off the capitulation in that second set against an opponent of a higher pedigree but one not in the best form?

Anisimova v Putintseva Prediction and Tip

This could be a close encounter but Putintseva looks to hold the edge given her opponent’s form. At 8/5, Putintseva is a tempting option for a win too.
