Auger-Aliassime Off to a Brisk Start

Top seed Felix Auger-Aliassime got off to a quick start as he breezed past his first round opponent and fellow wild card Elliot Benchetrit of Morocco on his Marrakech debut.

The World No. 9 broke Benchetrit in the very first game of the match and then again in the last game of the first set. He maintained his dominance in the second set, breaking the Moroccan in the fourth game of the set, but had to save four break points in the seventh game before safely closing out the set and the match.

Auger-Aliassime, who won his first-ever ATP title in Rotterdam after failing to win eight consecutive finals, improved to 16-6 this season.

The Canadian had a brilliant start, leading his country to first-ever ATP Cup title. He also reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open before reaching back-to-back finals in Rotterdam and Marseille, winning the former and finishing runner-up in the latter. But he didn’t come to Marrakech in best of forms having lost in his opening matches in both Indian Wells and Miami.

A good player on clay, Auger-Aliassime surprisingly struggled on the surface last season, but he will be hoping for a better season this year.

Molcan Makes Quick Work of Travaglia

Taking on Auger-Aliassime will be World No. 65 Alex Molcan who knocked out Stefano Travaglia with a straight sets win.

The left-handed Slovak bageled the Italian in the first set, and then won the first two games in the second set, but faced some resistance from the Italian, who drew level, breaking Molcan in the fourth game. But the Slovak broke again in the ninth game before closing out the match 6-0, 6-4 in an hour and 17 minutes.

The 24-year-old Molcan improved to 6-5 this season. Last week he was a quarterfinalist at the Marbella Challenger.

A good player on clay, he reached his only ATP final at Belgrade-2 last year, beating the likes of Fernando Verdasco and Federico Delbonis en route the title clash, which he lost to Novak Djokovic in straight sets.
