Van de Zandschulp Edges Past Dellien

The Netherlands’ Botic van de Zandschulp carved out a tough win over Bolivia’s Hugo Dellien to begin his campaign in Marrakech.

The Dutchman, who had a 3-1 tour-level record on clay court before the start of the match, needed two hours and 29 minutes to beat the Bolivian clay specialist 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

The victory improved the World No. 43’s season record to 10-7. The 2021 U.S. Open quarterfinalist reached the last eight of the very first tournament in Melbourne this year, but has struggled to go deep since then.

In the first round, the Dutchman saved 10 of 13 break points that he faced, while converting half of the eight break points.

Van de Zandschulp dominated the first set, but it was the Bolivian who turned the tables in the second. The Dutchman however seized control of the third with a break in the third game and then saved two break points in the eighth game to keep the lead intact, before wrapping up the match.

Seeded no. six in the tournament he will be hoping to make the quarterfinals for a second time this year.

Kopriva Breezes Past Zapata Miralles

The Czech Republic’s Vit Kopriva defeated Spain’s Bernabe Zapata Miralles for the second time in the past three days to reach the second round in Marrakech.

The 24-year-old, who qualified for the main draw with a comeback win over Zapata Miralles in the second qualifying round on Monday, needed just an hour and 15 minutes to dispatch the Spaniard in straight sets on Wednesday.

Kopriva, ranked No. 165, saved five of six break points and converted five of nine to beat the World No. 123, 6-1, 6-4.

The Czech player, who reached three Challenger Tour quarterfinals this year, improved to 2-2 at the tour-level this season. This is just the second main draw appearance for Kopriva this year. He had qualified for the main draw by winning the first qualifying round against Italy’s Matteo Viola and the second qualifying round against Zapata Miralles, beating the latter 0-6, 6-1, 7-5.
