Form hasn’t been on Sonego’s side this season and yet, he will be happy to get back into action on clay. Because outside of it, his record hasn’t been one to worry his opponents too much.
Sonego’s win-loss on hard court surfaces since the start of 2020, for instance, is a measely 13-21 and yet, he has risen to 21st in the world thanks to his performance on clay.
He would love to do a lot better on clay too though. This season, Sonego was knocked out in the second rounds at both, Cordoba and Rio and the only clay tournament at which he managed to win successive matches was in Buenos Aires where he made the semifinals.
Making things worse for him is that the Italian 26-year-old enters this competition on the back of a five-match losing streak that extends to nearly two months.
Can he break that hoodoo and get to the second round of a tournament he had done exactly that last season?

Ivashka Hoping to Come Back Well from Injury
It’s not been the greatest season for Ivashka yet because of his fitness concerns. After missing out on the Australian Open because of an ankle trouble, Ivashka hasn’t featured at the competitive level since February after suffering a wrist injury.
And between those two fitness woes, Ivashka has found time to feature in four indoor hard court competitions and has a 3-4 win-loss record. It’s not the kind of start he would have expected to the year.
Ivashka was expected to participate in the Marrakesh Open last week too but withdrew from that tournament because of his injury. And now that he is back, Ivashka will be hoping he can kick-start proceedings with a solid performance on a surface he had done well on last season.
Can he push an out of form Sonego and even edge past him though?

Sonego might not be in the best of form but against a returning Ivashka, he will be a favourite. Expect him to win in straight sets too for a riskier bet.
