Marin Cilic v Jo-Wilfried Tsonga Head to Head

The pair have played each other eight times before, and Cilic leads their head to head series by six matches to two. Included in that sequence is a victory by the Croat in this tournament seven years ago, but Tsonga won their last match on clay in the Davis Cup final in 2018.

Three-Time Monte Carlo Quarter-Finalist Cilic

The 2014 US Open winner, and runner-up at both the Australian Open and Wimbledon, Cilic is not known as a clay court  player, although he has twice made the last four at Roland Garros, and has won his home event and the Istanbul Open on this surface in the past.

He has also three times made the quarter-finals in Monte Carlo, most recently in 2018.

His best result of the year so far came at the Australian Open where he reached the fourth round before losing to Felix Augur-Aliassime.

The Croat has struggled to match those heights since, losing in the first round in Indian Wells, and the second in Miami, where he was beaten by the Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz.

This will be his first match of the year on clay.

Last Hurrah for Tsonga

Tsonga has just announced that he will retire from professional tennis after the French Open next month, so this is very much a last hurrah for him in Monte Carlo.

He should have few regrets after a career that has seen him win 18 singles titles, including two Masters, and, although, he never won a Grand Slam he was a beaten finalist in Melbourne in 2008, and was a two time semi-finalist at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

And, with total career earnings of over US $22 million, he has not done too badly out of the sport.

He has twice made the semi-finals in Monte Carlo and also the last eight on a further two occasions, but such ambitions are probably beyond him this time.

Cilic v Tsonga Prediction and Tip

Whilst this will no doubt be an emotional occasion for Tsonga, and he is sure to get a great reception from the crowd, unless Cilic allows himself to get caught up in it all, he should win this match with ease.

Tip: Cilic to win: 2/9 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
