Alexander Bublik v Stanislas Wawrinka Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between both players.

Bublik Hoping For Improved Clay Outing

Kazakh Alexander Bublik has had a mixed start to 2022, and continues to be one of the players on the tour in search for more consistency.

He did not have the best start Down Under but pulled his season back with a strong showing at Montpellier winning the title defeating Alexander Zverev convincingly in the final.

However, the rest of the hard court tournaments did not go too well for Bublik with him having a poor run in Dubai and Doha followed by early losses at the Sunshine Masters.

The Kazakh is yet to make a mark on clay having a less than optimal run in 2021. He did well to make the quarter-finals at Madrid but the rest of the season did not have much to talk about.

Bublik will hope to have a better clay outing this season and starts with a challenging opener against Swiss veteran Stan Wawrinka.

Wawrinka Returns After Long Lay Off

Three -time Grand Slam winner Stanislas Wawrinka returns to the tour after a long injury lay-off on the surface that has treated me the best among all.

Wawrinka won his only Masters 1000 here in 2014 and also won the French Open 2015 defeating a red-hot Novak Djokovic in a scintillating performance in the final at Roland Garros.

The Swiss was ranked as high as world number three at one point in his career and was also the runner-up at the 2017 French Open to none other than Rafael Nadal.

It has been a difficult road over the last few years for Wawrinka plagued with a number of injuries and a couple comeback attempts have been far from successful.

Wawrinka, just having turned 37 will be aware that this may well be a comeback including one last hoorah and will look to give it his all on the clay swing this year.

The Swiss played at the ATP Challenger in Marbella last month and did not make it past his opener. Although rusty, he will be looking forward to the number of tournaments over the next few weeks to get back into rhythm, form and match play.

Bublik v Wawrinka Prediction and Tip

This is a match that will be looked forward to by many, given the return of Wawrinka. Expect him to get some momentum going on a surface that favors him, against the Kazakh whose game is not quite so suited to clay.

However, it will largely depend on how well Wawrinka has recovered and whether he is still short of match practice.

Expect a tight match with the more match-fit Bublik to prevail.
