Grigor Dimitrov v Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Head to Head

They played once before and it happened last year in Rome with Fokina winning 6-4 7-6(2).

Dimitrov Looking Strong

Grigor Dimitrov arrived in Monaco in shaky form having posted a 7-6 record this year. He then went on to win four matches at the Monte-Carlo Masters improving his record and reaching his first semifinal of the year. The Bulgarian usually plays rather well in Monaco which is no surprise as he’s a longtime resident of the principality.

The conditions are familiar, the courts are familiar and the comfort level of a player has always been a factor in the sport. Dimitrov’s best match came against Casper Ruud with his display against Hubert Hurkacz a bit lacking. He was quite lucky to escape with that one as the Polish player served for the match.

Dimitrov’s game heavily relies on his serve and forehand as he likes to move the opponent around in order to finish off the point. He’s also capable of defensive tennis which is how he outlasted the Polish player who opted to be the more aggressive one. That’s a blueprint he can use in the semifinal as well.

First ATP 1000 Semifinal for Davidvich Fokina

Davidovich Fokina flashed his clay skill last year by playing some stellar tennis at a couple of events. The Spaniard reached the quarterfinal here last year but had to retire against Tsitsipas due to a leg injury. Since then he further improved and here he is, in his first ATP 1000 semifinal.

Getting here was quite a ride for Fokina as he first took out Marcos Giron in round 1. It was a good intro match to get his feet wet in a place where he seems rather comfortable. He then played a great match outlasting a solid effort from Novak Djokovic.

Then came a thrashing of red-hot but tired David Goffin and finally another grinding victory against Fritz who was fatigued as well. He can’t count on fatigue with Dimitrov so he will need to rely on his game and find a good balance between aggression and patience.

Dimitrov v Fokina Prediction and Tip

Grigor Dimitrov and Davidovich Fokina played once before on clay and it was the Spaniard that won. Realistically, Fokina is the better player on clay however Dimitrov has been more steady in this event. To put it simply, Fokina played the best and the worst tennis between the both of them this week. Dimitrov has hovered around in the middle.

That means that Fokina will determine the winner of this match. If he plays his best he will win, if not he will probably lose. He needs to strike a balance between patience and aggression and it’s something he struggled with in the past.

Dimitrov won’t give the match away and he will take it if you let him. Fokina will need to be much sharper than vs Fritz because that many errors will be punished by Dimitrov. It’s tricky to call. I’d like to ride with Fokina but I can’t fully commit. I’m pretty sure it goes to three but I will pick Dimitrov. He’s been more consistent.

Tip: Dimitrov to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
