This will be their first tour level meeting. In their only meeting at the ATP NextGen Finals last year, Baez won in four sets.

Baez Enjoying Good Season

Sebastian Baez has been brilliant on clay this year. The 21-year-old made it to the finals in Santiago, defeating Albert Ramos-Vinolas  in the semifinal but after four consecutive wins in the tournament he fell in the last hurdle, falling to Pedro Martinez in a three-set thriller.

Ranked 66th in the world, Baez was also a quarterfinalist in Cordoba and made his grand slam debut at the Australian Open, winning the first round against Albert Ramos-Vinolas before going down fighting to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second round.

Baez has lost his last three tour-level matches, falling in the first rounds of the Indian Wells Open, Miami Open and the Monte-Carlo Open.

While he finds it a bit tough on hard courts, he thrives on clay and will be looking to make an impression in Barcelona. Last year, the Argentine featured in nine Challenger finals, all on clay, winning six of those titles. He faces a tough first round but will be up for the challenge.

Musetti In Solid Form

Facing Baez will be Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti, who has been in decent form of late. The Italian is 9-9 for the season and last week he scored a massive upset at the Monte-Carlo Masters, beating sixth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in the second round. He had beaten Benoit Paire in the first round and had stretched Diego Schwartzman to the hilt in the Round of 16 before going down in three.

The 20-year-old was also a quarterfinalist in Marrakech and also made it to the last eight on he hard courts of Rotterdam and Pune.

Musetti has a very good 20-12 record on clay in his young career and had made it to the fourth round of the French Open last year. he was also a semifinalist in Lyon last year.

A very good clay court player, he won the junior grand slam at the Australian Open in 2019 and finished runner-up in the U.S. Open in 2018. So Musetti can play on all surfaces and will be a force to reckon with in Barcelona, where he has a 1-1 record from last year.

Baez v Musetti Prediction and Tip

This is expected to be a very close contest. Three sets seem imminent with Musetti advancing for a second round meeting with 12th seed Daniel Evans.
