Mikhail Kukushkin v Aljaz Bedene Head to Head

The pair have never played each other once before. This will be the first match between the 34-year old Kazakh, and the Slovenian, who is two years younger.

Kukushkin Better Known as Hard Court Player

Kukushkin was once an established top 40 player, but his ranking has fallen in the past three years to its current level, and he now plays predominantly on the Challenger circuit, except where he manages to qualify for main tour events, or, in the case of Belgrade, receives a wildcard.

Where he has succeeded in qualifying for ATP tournaments, the best he has managed this year so far was in Miami, where he pulled off a first round surprise by defeating the Dutch player Botic van de Zandschulp, before losing in three sets to Taylor Fritz.

In his pomp, he was better known as a hard court player, , but he has enjoyed success on clay at the Challenger level, winning two tournaments on the surface back in 2016.

Bedene on the Comeback Trail

Bedene is on the comeback trail after barely playing for eight months after contracting Covid last summer, and he was ill for some time afterwards.

In his absence his world ranking has plummeted and he is only able to enter the main draw in Belgrade because of his Protected Ranking (PR) status.

His return to action has not gone well so far, with first round defeats at both Indian Wells and Miami.

However, before his enforced absence, this was still a man capable last year of reaching the third round of Wimbledon, and making the quarter-finals of Lyon on clay.

Kukushkin v Bedene Prediction and Tip

A  year ago, Bedene would have been the clear favourite for this match, and he may still be expected to win, provided that he can begin to approach the levels again that he showed before his illness.

Tip: Bedene to win: 5/7 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
