Elena Rybakina got her feet wet on clay a few days ago when her nation played the German team in the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers. The big-serving Rybakina played two strong matches delivering two points for her nation and getting some valuable time on clay before the season starts.
She’s played very strong in those matches hitting her serves at a high rate and bombarding the opponent from the baseline. One of those wins came against Kerber and that’s a confidence-building win as well. She’s only 11-8 on the year but that can be certainly improved.
The issues for her are the same as before, consistency. She’s almost unstoppable when she’s consistent but that rarely happens. Her game is a high risk – high reward type of game and controlling that is very hard but if she can do it, she will be almost unstoppable.

Schunk, Germany’s Big Hope
Natasja Schunk is a super-talented tennis player from Germany born in 2003. The teenager is one of the brightest German talents to come out in quite a while and many hope she will be another name in a long line of German greats. So far this season it’s been promising.
Schunk is a very interesting lefty who likes to play indoors and on clay. She’s 14-10 on the year with all 14 of those wins coming either indoors or clay. She played a couple of pro events this year and did rather well. Two matches here in the qualifiers means she’s quite familiar with the conditions and she played extremely well.
Both wins came against more seasoned players and that should give her enough confidence to just go out and play her game. Nobody expects her to beat Rybakina so she can simply enjoy the experience.
Rybakina v Schunk Prediction and Tip
So obviously Rybakina is heavily favoured here because she is one of the best players in the world and she has been for a while. However, there is some danger lurking in playing a player you have never seen before. One that will have zero pressure and one that will have her fans backing her.
The surface is better suited for Schunk than Rybakina who is pretty okay on clay but generally does better on hard courts. She should win this one easily but you never know on clay.
A few bounces here and there and things might change. I don’t think Schunk can win but three sets, quite possibly. Even so, I’ll back Rybakina to keep it in two.
