Martic, a Champion here in 2019

Former World No. 14 Petra Martic has had a rough few spells of late and if there was ever a place to rediscover her form, Istanbul is as good as it can be.

The 30-year-old Croat won her maiden singles title here in 2019 and since then, has managed only one other final in Zhengzhou that season. Martic’s form has dropped gradually over the last couple of years as she finds herself battling inconsistency.

So far in 2022, the best she managed was a quarterfinal run in the BNP Paribas Open – upsetting Tamara Zidansek, Emma Raducanu, and Liudmila Samsonova en route. However, the current world number 60 has also lost in the opening rounds in Miami, Monterrey, St. Petersburg, and the Australian Open.

Even though Martic can play on clay, her lack of rhythm and momentum in the game doesn’t really do well for her prospects here.

Kalinina, in a Blazing Form

While Petra Martic’s sole clay practice came in the ITF Group 1 event for Croatia against Aleksandra Krunic (4-6, 7-5, 6-4), Anhelina Kalinina had a more concrete build-up to the clay swing.

Playing in the WTA 500 Charleston, the Ukrainian made it to the quarterfinal after defeating Elena Rybakina, Alize Cornet, and Aliaksandra Sasnovich. She ultimately fell to Ons Jabeur in straight sets but in the process, she reached her career-best singles ranking as World No. 36.

Kalinina also featured in the fourth round in Miami where she dismissed Madison Keys early on; she retired against Jessica Pegula trailing 0-6 in the first set.

Compared to Martic, Kalinina may still be slightly inexperienced at 25 years old but she has a flair for clay. Of her 24 ITF finals, 15 have come on this surface and four of those came as recently as 2021. She also reached her maiden singles final on the WTA Tour in Budapest – another clay event.

Kalinina v Martic Prediction and Tip

Anhelina Kalinina is the odds-on favourite for this match and rightly so – she has the momentum and form needed to dismiss Martic comfortably. Although Martic can put up a fight, it is hard to imagine her overcoming the in-form Ukrainian who is better primed for the surface.

A more bullish bet would be the number four seed doing so in straight sets.
