Lorenzo Sonego v Elias Ymer Head to Head

Both their previous competitive meetings have come on the Challenger circuit. It’s 1-1 on head to head with the two matches having been played indoors.

Sonego Hoping to Turn Things Around

Sonego looked to have made a solid start to the season on the hard courts of Australia, a surface he has traditionally not enjoyed. A couple of wins at both, Sydney International and Australian Open kicked off his year but since then the form has fallen away.

So much so his results on clay, which is his favourite surface, haven’t been too much to write home about either.

In February, he featured in three of these competitions – at Cordoba, Buenos Aires and Rio – and his best showing was two back to back wins in one of those competitions.

And then, more recently, Sonego resumed on clay at Monte-Carlo but again, struggled to get going. An opening win against Ilya Ivashka was par for the course but a 6-4, 6-4 rout at the hands of Laslo Djere left him with more question-marks than answers.

Can he get himself a decent run here in Barcelona after a first round bye?

Ymer Faces No Opening Worries

In his first ATP tournament on clay this season, the 135th-ranked Ymer has already done a lot more than what one would have expected out of him.

The Swede, who needed a couple of victories to make it to the main draw, registered a 6-3, 6-0 win in the first round against Maxime Cressy to seal his berth against Sonego. The match lasted a mere 50 minutes.

Such was Ymer’s dominance over his opponent that he did not face a single break point and broke Cressy every single time he got an opportunity. Four break-points, four breaks of serves.

It might not be as easy against Sonego, who has a better track record on clay and this season than Cressy but Ymer does have something of an x-factor on a surface he has won seven out of his 11 Futures and Challengers tournaments.

Sonego v Ymer Prediction and Tip

While Sonego is 1/2 to win this one, we reckon this could go either way with Ymer’s 17/10 becoming a tempting option. Expect a three-setter.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
