The pair have played each other twice before in their junior days in 2010, on the clay of Estoril and the hard courts of Luxembourg, Cirstea winning on each occasion.

Rus Brushes Aside Local

Rus arrived in Istanbul in indifferent form, having failed to get beyond the second round of any event so far in 2022, and having lost her last four matches.

However, if she could have hand-picked a first round opponent, the world number 219, Ipek Oz of Turkey might have been it, a woman still very inexperienced at this level.

Rus began strongly, breaking Oz in her opening service game. The Turk briefly threatened a comeback when she broke back, but then dropped her own serve again and Rus went on to take the set.

Two early breaks put the Dutchwoman in complete control of the second set, and she underlined her dominance with a  further break to seal victory.

Cirste Looking for Deep Run in Turkey

Cirstea began 2022 by reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open, her best performance in a Grand Slam for five years.

A semi-final appearance in Lyon helped underpin her career resurgence, and, seeded second, she will be hoping for a deep run in Istanbul.

Certainly she was not seriously troubled by lucky loser Kamilia Rakhimova, the world 95, in their match on Tuesday, although the match began with a  flurry of dropped service games, after which sequence the Romanian found herself a break up.

Rakhimova briefly pegged her back, but then dropped ger serve once more to gift the first set to Cirstea.

After another run of dropped service gams in the second set, Cirstea gain found herself a break up, but this time she was in no mood to be generous. She reeled off three more games to wrap up the win with a minimum of fuss.

Rus v Cirstea Prediction and Tip

Although Cirstea won their two previous matches, they were a long time ago. More relevant is the fact that, arriving in Istanbul, the Romanian had been in good form this year, and the Dutchwoman had been struggling.

Tip: Cirstea to win: 7/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
