Parrizas-Diaz Sees Off Italian Challenger

Parrizas-Diaz played her first match of the year on clay on Tuesday against the Italian Martina Trevisan, the world number 80, but despite starting the slight underdog, she acclimatised well enough to the conditions.

The match started with the first six games going against serve, before settling down for a brief while. The Spaniard then broke and had the chance to serve for the set, but dropped her own serve in turn, leading to a tie-break.

Both women again struggled on serve, but the Spaniard held her’s at the vital moments and claimed the first set.

After the pair swapped an early break in the second, it reverted to serve, until Trevisan had her own chance to serve for the set. The Italian had a set point, could not convert it and was left to rue that when Parrizas-Diaz broke back.

And the real cost of that failure was revealed two games later when she dropped her serve for what proved to be the final time.

Bondar Lives Up to Clay Court Record

Bondar came into this event with a  good record on clay, having won 10 singles and 14 doubles title on that surface on the junior tours.

And, despite being ranked 23 places below her, she proved too strong for Tereza Martincova of the Czech Republic in their first round match on Tuesday.

The two women swapped breaks at the start of the match, but then Bondar broke again, and consolidated her lead to claim the first set.

When Martincova broke early in the second set it seemed she might stage a comeback. But she dropped her serve again, and then once more, giving the Hungarian the opportunity to serve out to love.

Parrizas-Diaz v Bondar Prediction and Tip

This could be a close match, but with Bondar’s greater prowess on clay, she might just have the edge.
