Baez Looking to Return to Form

Ever since he reached a maiden ATP final in Santiago this season, the 21-year-old Argentine has struggled to win matches on consistent basis.

Baez lost in the Santiago final to Pedro Martinez, but followed it with a singles win in the Davis Cup against the Czech Republic. More disappointments followed though as Baez failed to win a main draw match, losing in the first rounds of Indian Wells, Miami and Monte-Carlo Masters and also the Phoenix Challenger.

The Argentine, who won six Challenger titles from nine finals last year (all on clay), is 10-11 this season. He was also a quarterfinalist in Cordoba and has an overall record of 8-6 on clay in 2022.

He will be desperate to get back to winning ways. Can Estoril help him regain form?

Sousa is a Past Champion

In 2018, Joao Sousa, who had never won a match in Estoril previously, went on to beat Francis Tiafoe in the final to lift the title.

The 33-year-old has been given a wild card for the tournament this year and he will be hoping to improve his tournament record of 6-5. Interestingly he has won just one more match in his six appearances in Estoril.

The Portuguese is 7-5 this season, but that’s largely due to his title-winning run in Pune, Maharashtra. He has been disappointing in the other tournaments. In, Pune, Sousa had beaten Emil Ruusuvuori to claim what was the Portuguese’s fourth title from 11th final.

Sousa’s recent form is a cause if concern though. Playing as a lucky loser he lost in the first round in Indian Wells, then lost a qualifying round in Miami. He finally won a first round match in Marrakech, but lost in the second round, before failing to get past the second qualifier in Monte-Carlo. Last week, he was beaten by Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro in the first round of the Serbia Open.

Baez v Sousa Prediction and Tip

It’s a matchup between two struggling players who have seen both the highs and lows this season. While Sousa is the local player and also a past champion there will be expectations from him. But expect Baez to edge past the Portuguese.
