Questions Over Harris’ Fitness

Having retired from his Round of 16 match at the Barcelona Open, Lloyd Harris will return to action at the Estoril Open on Tuesday.

The World No. 39 comes in with a 7-10 record in 2022. The 25-year-old, who is a two-time ATP finalist, had a slow start to the season, but has picked up a few wins recently, reaching the Round of 16 in Miami and also the Round of 16 at the Barcelona Open last week.

Harris defeated Roberto Carballes Baena and Albert Ramos-Vinolas, both in straight sets, but was down 0-6 in the third round match against Alex de Mianur when he was forced to retire with an injury. It will be interesting to see if he has regained complete fitness for the tournament.

Harris, who has an overall clay court record of 6-13 at the tour-level, is 2-2 on the surface this season.

He will be making his second appearance in Estoril after falling in the first round on his debut last year.

Taberner In as Lucky Loser

World No. 92 Carlos Taberner has entered the main draw as a lucky loser.

In the first qualifying round, the Spaniard knocked out Portugal’s Tiago Cação 6-2, 6-4, but lost in the second qualifying round to Bernabe Zapata Miralles 1-6, 3-6.

He is coming into the tournament with a 4-5 season record at the tour-level and that includes a decent showing in Barcelona, where he qualified for the main draw and then ousted Sebastian Korda 6-3, 6-0 in the first round. The 24-year-old also took a set off Felix Auger Aliassime in the second round but eventually went down 1-6, 6-3, 4-6.

A clay court specialist, Taberner won his fifth Challenger title in March by triumphing in Roseto degli Abruzzi.

Taberner is 4-4 at the tour-level on clay this season, having also won his first-round matches in Cordoba, Santiago and Marrakech.

This will be his first main draw appearance in Estoril and he will be hoping to make a winning start.

Harris v Taberner Prediction and Tip

This is going to be an interesting matchup between Taberner, a clay specialist, and Harris, who has more experience on top and better overall record on the tour. The South African is yet to find his feet on clay and could struggle against the lower-ranked Spaniard. Expect Taberner to edge through.
