Frances Tiafoe had a very rocky first match in Estoril against Dusan Lajovic and he overcame it with luck, trickery, and skill. It was a combination of all of the above but the American struggled physically early in the match only to take a medical timeout a break down in the 2nd. He returned a new man and turned around the match.
It was a bit lucky as Lajovic fell apart once again when things did not go his way. It is starting to happen a lot of times these past weeks and generally the Serbian is dropping form and points everywhere. Getting back to Tiafoe, he said he is good after the match and I believe him.
He’s reached the final in Estoril before so generally he tends to play rather well here. I expect him to continue playing well although the challenge will be tough.

Borges, Portugal’s Big Hope
Nuno Borges is not a very young lad yet he is one of the youngest players from Portugal doing damage in the tennis world. It’s been a slow rise for the Portuguese but he is making his way towards the top 100 with his debut coming sooner than later.
A deep run here could help him in that as he rarely gets a chance to play on the ATP Tour. Most of his damage is coming on the Challenger Tour and he’s been quite strong there. Clay is his favourite surface and his forehand is his major weapon.
He loves playing at home and generally enjoys a lot of support. The 25-year old will face a big challenge when he faces Tiafoe but it’s we’ll a good test.
Tiafoe v Borges Prediction and Tip
So they never played before but of them have a quite similar play. Both have a very solid forehand and both are capable of attacking. Both are rather quick as well and can move well on this surface. The serve is better with the American and that’s something that could be crucial.
Generally, this is a matchup Tiafoe should win, especially after the strong comeback over Lajovic. Borges is good but he had issues against Andujar early in his match trailing a break after which he turned it around.
Andujar retired from the match as he struggled physically so it’s questionable whether Borges would have turned it around if the Spanish player was healthy. Back the American to do it, he’s simply a better player and if he’s good as he claims he is I see no reason why he should not win it.
