Top Seed Will Be Eager to Claim His First Title of 2022

Two-time Munich Open champion Alexander Zverev comes to this year’s edition as the top seed. The World No. 3 is 17-6 this season from all tournaments but is yet to add to his 19 career titles this year. He, however, reached a 29th tour-level final in Montpellier, only to finish runner-up to Alexander Bublik.

The 25-year-old German, who thrives on all surfaces, has a win record of 71.6% on clay. He is 5-1 on the surface this year, having won both his Davis Cup matches against Brazil and reached the semifinals in Monte-Carlo, before being stopped by eventual champion Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Zverev is 14-5 in Munich. He won the title in 2017 by defeating Guido Pella in the final and the defended his title in 2018 by beating Philipp Kohlschreiber in the title clash. He couldn’t go past the quarterfinals in the last two editions in 2019 and 2021.

Zverev comes to Munich in good form and will be desperate to win his first title of the season, particularly after winning six titles last year.

In Monte Carlo, Zverev registered wins against some tough opponents in Federico Delbonis, Pablo Carreno Busta and Jannik Sinner. He will hope to continue that sort of form in Munich.

Rune Knocks Out Qualifier Lehecka

For the third consecutive tournament, 18-year-old Holger Rune has advanced to the second round by securing a win in the opening round.

Playing as a qualifier in Monte-Carlo, he had beaten Aslan Karatsev in the first round. Then at the Serbia Open, the Dane defeated Cristian Garin in Round 1. His most recent success came over Jiri Lehecka in Munich. Rune beat the Czech qualifier 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 in the first round on Monday.

The one-hour-and-38-minute contest saw Rune win 70 percent of the points on his first serve, save one of four break points and convert four of 11.

With the win, the World No. 70 improved his season record to 5-9 and his record on clay to 3-5. Rune also captured a fifth Challenger Tour title, by winning the clay court event in Sanremo, Italy earlier this month.

Zverev v Rune Prediction and Tip

Despite Rune’s recent form, and his ability to raise his level against top players, Zverev will be the overwhelming favourite to win this match. Expect the German to march into another quarterfinal at home.
