Not Ideal From Cilic Lately

Marin Cilic played only two clay matches so far this year and the Croatian won only one. Both came in Monte-Carlo and in the first he proved much better than Tsonga who is practically retired. In the 2nd one, he put Fritz through a rumble but untimely the American prevailed.

Cilic has been a good clay player once but nowadays he’s mostly solid. At times he will have the occasional good match but mostly it’s been disappointing. He hasn’t beaten a strong player on clay for a while and generally his form this year has been okay at best.

He’s 10-8 on the year and that’s about who he’s been for a while now on the tour. He will do most of his damage on indoor hard courts or the grass swing but his clay glory days are behind him.

Baez Shines in Round One

Sebastian Baez as an Argentinian is naturally very good on clay and he demonstrated all of his skill in the first round by smashing native Joao Sousa 6-1 6-3. It was a fabulous display by Baez who is a very attacking player and he certainly attacked his opponent. Sousa did not have a single break point the entire match.

His form this year has been pretty decent. He’s had some strong showings on clay posting a 12-6 record so far. Overall his record is 17-13 and recently he’s been okay. In Monte-Carlo, he lost to Pablo Carreno Busta while in Barcelona Lorenzo Musetti proved better.

Overall his biggest flaw is his shorter stature which forces him to exert a lot of energy on the surface covering the court. He tends to stay away from the baseline and counter-attack which works well but at times his opponent just finds a way.

Cilic v Baez Prediction and Tip

So they never played before and on paper, this is a very interesting matchup as Cilic is very tall and Baez is short for a tennis player. The Argentinian will have to stay far back in order to get as many balls back and he will certainly have to run a lot.

He’s more than capable of that but Cilic won’t like this matchup as Baez is capable of attacking really well. Generally speaking, Baez has more variety on clay and things will be tricky for Cilic as he is not a fast mover on the surface. For the Croatian, a lot will depend on his serve.

If he gives his opponent many 2nd service looks he will in trouble. If he keeps his first service percentage high he will have a better chance to win this one. Overall I think Baez is closer to victory considering it’s played in Estoril. I would not be surprised if it goes 3 and I would not be shocked if Cilic pulled out the win either. I’m gonna back Baez though.

Tip: Cilic to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
