Victoria Azarenka v Viktorija Golubic Head to Head

Azarenka Opens Her Clay Court Season

Azarenka hasn’t featured in a lot of tournaments this season, and nor has she set the courts alight as a world number 17. And while her ranking has improved because of the tweaked WTA system accounting for the pandemic, her performances have left a lot to desire.

It looked to have started off reasonably well for Azarenka who reached the quarterfinal in the first tournament she featured in the year, in Adelaide and the Belarusian followed it up with a fourth round appearance at Australian Open.

However, since then, Azarenka has won just three matches and lost five of them, the last of those defeats including a retirement from her third round encounter against the 16-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova.

That was a strange retirement too because Azarenka had stormed off the court without explaining too much but from there on, she hasn’t played any tennis.

Which means the world number 17 will now be appearing in her first clay court competition since her fourth round exit at the French Open last year. Can she make this a solid start?

Golubic Stunned in Clay Court Opener

Golubic has had her moments on clay and her only WTA title at the highest level had come on the red dirt of Gstaad way back in 2016.

That hasn’t translated into any kind of good results for her on this level in recent times though with the Swiss player falling to three defeats from four matches last year on clay.

This year, Golubic kick-started her clay court campaign in Stuttgart where she was drawn to take on the 20-year-old Eva Lys, a German ranked 283rd in the world. And when Golubic, who was 1/4 odds on favourite to win it grabbed the first set, it looked like things were par for the course.

Instead, Golubic fell to a 5-7, 7-5, 7-5 defeat to leave more questions than answers about her chances in the rest of the clay court season.

And despite Azarenka’s obvious issues in recent times, things might not be easy for the Swiss world number 39.

Azarenka v Golubic Prediction and Tip

Azarenka starts off a 2/5 favourite but there’s always that worry about someone returning from injury, having not played not played in over a month and featuring in her first clay court match for the year. We anticipate this to be a fighting encounter.

Tip: Over 19.5 games in the match: 5/6 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
