This will be the first meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour.

Kwon Knocks Out Paire

Soon-woo Kwon started his campaign in the 2022 Estoril Open with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Benoit Paire.

The 24-year-old South Korean will now hope to keep the same tempo going against Vinolas and post his best results on the ATP Tour this season. Up until now, the #71-ranked player has struggled a fair bit as he failed to bag successive wins in any tournament.

In Barcelona, he fell to Carlos Alcaraz while in the Monte-Carlo Masters, he succumbed in the opening qualifying match against Bernabe Zapata Miralles. Similarly, in the Indian Wells and Miami Open, Kwon was dismissed in the opening round.

The youngster has certainly kept himself busy this season as his tally now stands at 11-10. This is also his first time in Estoril so it will be interesting to see how he fares.

Vinolas, Boasting an Impressive Clay Record

34-year-old Albert Ramos Vinolas will certainly fancy his chances on the clay courts in Estoril, especially considering his track record on the surface.

He has an impressive 10 finals, including the Cordoba Open which he won in February. The Spaniard also reached the semifinal in Santiago and the third round in Monte-Carlo (upsetting Cameron Norrie).

Vinolas started his campaign here with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win over Jordan Thompson in the opener. Over the course of his career, the number six seed has also beaten a handful of top 10 players – including Casper Ruud, Marin Cilic, Andy Murray, Kei Nishikori, and Andrey Rublev.

Vinolas v Kwon Prediction and Tip

Ramos Vinolas will start as the favourite for obvious reasons but it may be a fallacy to completely disregard Kwon’s chances. While the South Korean may not have a rich clay pedigree, he makes up for it with endurance, stamina, and a relatively better physique. Plus, he is capable of surprises and is bound to give his adversary a run for his money.

This match can quite likely swing either way but we may very well be looking at a long game here.
