Jessica Pegula v Camila Giorgi Head to Head

They played six times before with Pegula leading 4-2. The most recent one came last year in Cincinnati with Pegula winning 6-2 6-2.

Pegula’s Time to Shine

Jessica Pegula has had a very solid season so far but the American is pretty keen on making it even better. It takes a particular kind of drive to work your way towards being one of the best players in the world while having a billionaire father.

Pegula has always been very motivated and some of that improvement is being shown this year. She’s more consistent in her play despite the record indicating only a solid season so far 12-8. She’s capable of playing strong clay tennis as she went 6-4 but it’s not her best surface.

Movement can be an issue for her as she is not the quickest on the court but usually against players like Giorgi she tends to do fine. The Jabeur’s of the world trouble her most as that variety is really hard to counter. Luckily Giorgi has no variety in her game.

Bad Play From Giorgi

Camila Giorgi is a really interesting player. The Italian has a very polarizing playstyle that can be very fun to watch she’s playing well. When she’s not it’s borderline unwatchable. The mantra is attack, attack, attack. There is no variety, there are no adjustments, it’s simply attacking.

Obviously, when it works it’s impossible to stop. We saw that last year when she won her maiden WTA 1000 trophy but ever since then she failed to replicate the same level. When she’s off its unforced error after unforced errors with scorelines pretty much indicating a trashing.

This year it’s not been much tennis overall with a 2-5 record overall but generally, the play has been bad. A switch to clay might help but she did not look too good in Stuttgart either. Madrid suits her game so perhaps she can do something with that.

Pegula v Giorgi Prediction and Tip

Okay, so this one is rather simple. Both love to attack and both generally don’t stay far from that objective. Pegula has been the far more consistent player over the past 12 months and that’s why she’s ranked so high. Giorgi is a player she likes to play as she bested her four times before.

Generally, they trade very hard-hitting blows and the American comes out on top as the better player overall. She’s also more mentally stable which matters when things don’t go her way. I don’t think I can back Giorgi because she’s not showing any real improvement in recent months.

Her play has been shaky all year long and I don’t think she has enough to take down the pretty solid Pegula overall. As Madrid helps servers as well that’s another bonus for Pegula as she serves with more consistency than her opponent.
