Fruhvirtova Eager to Impress on Madrid Debut

Sixteen-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova will be keen to impress on her Madrid Open debut. The Czech player, ranked No. 205th in the world, caught the attention at the Miami Open earlier this season.

Fruhvirtova defeated Danka Kovinic, World No. 24 Elise Mertens and World No. 16 Victoria Azarenka in the first three rounds, before Paula Badosa ended her dream run in the Round of 16.

She also defeated Ana Konjuh in the first round of the Charleston Open but lost to Belinda Bencic in the second round. Since then, she also lost a Billie Jean King Cup match to Britain’s Harriet Dart, and therefore comes to the tournament, having lost the last two matches.

Overall, she is 10-6 this season from all tournaments and that includes an ITF title in Cancun. It was her third ITF title from five finals, all of which came on hard courts. Can she replicate her hard court form on clay?

Kanepi Comes Through Qualifiers

World no. 55 Kaia Kanepi qualified for the main draw with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Italy’s Martina Trevisan in the second qualifying round on Wednesday.

The Estonian had scored a convincing 6-1, 6-1 win over Harriet Dart in the first qualifying round on Tuesday.

The 36-year-old has been in solid form this season. She was a quarterfinalist at the Australian Open and has won two matches each in the last three tournaments in Indian Wells, Miami and Charleston.

Making her seventh appearance in Madrid, Kanepi has not had much success in the tournament, reaching the quarterfinals just once in 2013.

The seven time major quarterfinalist is a good player on clay and three of her four WTA titles have come on the surface. But she hasn’t won a title since winning in Brussels in 2013. She did reach her first final since Brussels at the Gippsland Trophy last year, ending a long drought.

Kanepi’s experience should help her in the opening round.

Fruhvirtova v Kanepi Prediction and Tip

While Fruhvirtova can be dangerous, she will have a tough time against the vastly experienced Kanepi, who has shown good form in the qualifiers and is far more experienced on clay than her opponent. Expect the Estonian to advance in straight sets.

Tip: Kanepi to win in straight sets: 10/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
