Belinda Bencic v Karolina Muchova Head to Head

Bencic won their only meeting in Cincinnati last year. The Swiss was 7-5, 2-1 up in the Round of 16 when Muchova had retired.

Bencic Dumps Out Begu

Belinda Bencic picked up from where she left in Charleston to begin her Madrid Open campaign in style. The Charleston Open champion knocked out Romanian qualifier Irina-Camelia Begu in the first round on Thursday to extend her unbeaten run on clay to 7-0 in 2022.

Overall, the World no. 13 improved her season record to 16-6 with the 6-4, 6-1 win over the World No. 62.

Bencic wasn’t broken in the match by Begu, and she converted half of the eight break points that she held to win in an hour and 30 minutes.

The Tokyo Olympics gild medallist had a slow start to the season, only reaching as far as the quarterfinals in Sydney and St. Petersburg, but she struck form in Miami, reaching the semifinals and then picked her first ever clay title in Charleston by beating Ons Jabeur in the final.

It was in fact the first time when the five-time tour-level champion was competing on a clay court final. She has a 54% win record on the surface and would be looking to improve that further in the second round.

Muchova Rallies Past Zheng

Facing Bencic in the second round will be the Czech Republic’s Karolina Muchova, who rallied from a set down to beat China’s Qinwen Zheng in the first round on Thursday.

Muchova, who has struggled with an abdominal injury this year, had come into the tournament with a 2-0 record in 2022. She had won her first two rounds at the Miami Open, but then withdrew from the tournament without taking the court for the third round.

Playing her second tournament, Muchova made a good start as she made a remarkable recovery after being outplayed in the first set to beat Zheng 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 in two hours and 26 minutes. The Czech player saved 10 of 13 break points and capitalised on three of five breaking opportunities to beat the World no. 72, who had received a wild card for the tournament.

Muchova, ranked 67 in the world, was a quarterfinalist on her Madrid debut last year. She is a decent player on clay and reached the final in Prague in 2019.

Bencic v Muchova Prediction and Tip
