Leylah Fernandez v Andrea Petkovic Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour.

Petkovic, Coming off a Muted Season

34-year-old Andrea Petkovic hasn’t played a whole lot of tennis this season; she is 5-4 so far with her best run coming in the Melbourne Set 1 where she reached the quarterfinal (defeating Liudmila Samsonov in the opener).

Since then, the veteran German and former World No. 9 has succumbed in the opening rounds with her last tournament being the Qatar Open where she cleared the qualifiers but lost in the first main-draw match to Viktorija Golubic.

After being out of sorts and form for quite some time, Petkovic enjoyed a brief resurgence last year when she reached two WTA finals – both on clay. She was the runner-up in Hamburg European Open but did go the distance in Cluj-Napoca Open.

Although she is heavily experienced, her lack of rhythm and form does not really bode well for her. Add to this equation her disappointing results in Madrid over the years, the ask of overcoming Fernandez becomes all the more tricky.

This time around, she started as a qualifier here and defeated Misaki Doi and Kaja Juvan in straight sets to reach the main draw.

Fernandez, Looking Confident

By contrast, World No. 20 Leylah Fernandez is looking sharp and ready to roar on the clay swing. Most recently, she featured in the Billie Jean King Cup Qualifiers where she guided Canada to a win over Latvia by dismissing Darja Semenistaja and Daniela Vismane.

In addition to that, the young Canadian lifted the second singles title of her career in Monterrey by upsetting Camila Osorio in the final. She followed that result with a fourth-round stint in the Indian Wells Open.

That said, Fernandez had a rough time in Miami (opening-round loss to Karolina Muchova) and Charleston (shock defeat to Magda Linette). One may also question her ability on clay although, she is yet to play a lot more tennis on this surface. She did feature in the Madrid Open last year but lost in the opening qualifying game.

Fernandez v Petkovic Prediction and Tip

Fernandez is the odds-on favourite here but whether can she do it in straight sets or three is a different question. Petkovic is experienced and has a much-superior clay pedigree; she can very well give her 19-year-old adversary a run for her money and take this match to distance.

But ultimately, Fernandez should win this one.

Tip: Over 20.5 Games, Fernandez to Win: 8/5 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
