Ekaterina Alexandrova v Nuria Parrizas Diaz Head to Head

This will be a first meeting between the two.

Alexandrova Tops Ostapenko

Qualifier Ekaterina Alexandrova topped 10th seed Jelena Ostapenko in the first round on Thursday.

The Russian needed an hour and 50 minutes to beat the World no. 12, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. Ranked 45th in the world, Alexandrova dominated the first set and looked in control of the second as well, having broken the Latvian twice and taken a 0-3 lead. But Ostapenko came back.

Ostapenko had failed to create a single break point opportunity in the first set, while failing to save both break points that she faced. But in the second she created eight break point chances  for herself, capitalising on three of those occasions and forcing the decider.

After three consecutive holds, there were five consecutive breaks of serve in the third set, with Alexandrova taking the lead. She end the series of breaks by serving out the match in the 10th game.

Alexandrova has been in decent touch recently. She was a semifinalist in Charleston but won one and lost one in Stuttgart. She qualified for the main draw in Madrid with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Germany’s Tamara Korpatsch and a 6-1, 6-1 drubbing of France’s Clara Burel in the two qualifying rounds.

This was also Alexandrova’s first main draw win in Madrid. She has a 46% win record on clay.

Parrizas Diaz Stuns Cirstea

Spin’s Nuria Parrizas Diaz toppled World No. 27 Sorana Cirstea in the opening round.

Broken thrice in the first set, Parrizas Diaz broke her opponent four times to take the first set. She looked far more confident and comfortable in the second set, saving all the four break points that she faced and converting two of three to beat the Istanbul semifinalist 6-4, 6-2.

With the win, Parrizas Diaz improved to 10-8 this year. She was a semifinalist in Monterrey and a quarterfinalist in Melbourne Summer Set 2, but has lacked the consistency recently. The 30-year-old, who is making her Madrid debut, had won two WTA 125 titles last year, with one of them coming on clay in Bastad.

She is not too experienced at the top level but has done well at the ITF level over the years. It will be interesting to see if she can keep the winning run going at home.

Alexandrova v Parrizas Diaz Prediction and Tip

Form and experience both favour Alexandrova. Expect Parrizas Diaz to put up a fight but the Russian should advance.

Tip: Alexandrova to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
