Victoria Azarenka v Tamara Zidansek Head to Head

Zidansek beat Azarenka in their only meeting in Monterrey in 2020.

Azarenka Overcomes Golubic

Two-time Madrid Open finalist Victoria Azarenka, playing for the first time in over a month, advanced to the second round with a tough two-set win over Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic.

The World no. 17, who last played in the second round of the Miami Open, retiring against Linda Fruhvirtova while trailing 2-6 0-3, made a winning return to the tour, beating Golubic 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 in an hour and 46 minutes.

A custody battle over her son had kept her from leaving the United States over the last one month, but she will be happy to travel to Europe and the win would do her confidence a world of good.

Both players exchanged two breaks of serve in the first set before Azarenka claimed the tiebreaker. She then took a commanding 3-0 lead with two breaks of serve in the second set. Golubic did pull one break back but couldn’t get another, while Azarenka finished off the match with a third break in the set.

This is her seventh tournament this year, but Azarenka has made it to just one quarterfinal in Adelaide-1. The 21-time winner from 41 finals has a 1-6 record in clay court finals, with her only success coming in Andalusia in 2011. She reached back-to-back finals in Madrid in 2011 and 2012 but couldn’t win the title.

Zidansek Ends Losing Run

Facing Azarenka will be last year’s French Open semifinalist Tamara Zidansek, who reached the second round for the second consecutive year in Madrid.

The World no. 24 Zidansek ousted Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia in straight sets. The Slovenian was broken in the very first game of the match but she took charge from that point on, breaking the Brazilian thrice in the first set. Zidansek continued her dominance in the second set, taking a 3-0 lead, but Haddad Maia won the next three games to draw level.

The Slovenian got her second break of the second set in the eighth game and then served out the one hour 25 minute contest 6-2, 6-3.

With the win, Zidansek improved her season record to 6-5 from all her matches and ended a four-match losing streak that began with a third round defeat at the Austrlian Open.

The winner of the Swiss Open title on clay last year, Zidansek had reached the semifinals in Adelaide 2 earlier this season but had to withdraw before the final four clash. Clay brings the best out of her and the win in the first round will give her a lot of confidence.

Azarenka v Zidansek Prediction and Tip
