Reilly Opelka v Sebastian Korda Head to Head

They never played against each other.

Opelka, the Clay Masters

Reilly Opelka stunned many when he reached the semifinals in Rome last year on clay with many reporters joking that he found a new surface to dominate on. Opelka joked about it too but realistically called it something that won’t ever likely happen against he was putting up a serving clinic.

Indeed, the servebot is capable of playing some solid clay tennis if his serve is working. That is especially true for Madrid where serves are very important due to the altitude. Just ask John Isner who frustrated Andrey Rublev last year in a match where he defeated him.

Opelka is 17-7 on the year and he’s coming off of a solid outing in Munich where he did lose to Oscar Otte which was a match he should have won. He won’t mind as he gets more time to get ready for Madrid where he could be dangerous if his serve game is on point.

Korda Back to Winning Ways

Sebastian Korda will come to Madrid after a strong showing in Estoril where he is still playing. It’s unclear how far the American will go but a semifinal there should wash out the abysmal showing in Barcelona. Korda is a good clay player as he proved it many times already.

His maiden trophy came on clay last year, his maiden grand slam 4th round appearance came on clay the year before so overall he’s been pretty good. He has a good serve and a good forehand and moves well for someone of his size. All of that should work well in Madrid especially if he can hit the serve.

Playing Opelka will be a new experience for him and one where he will need to maintain his composure and avoid frustration. Can he do it? Find out below.

Opelka v Korda Prediction and Tip

So first of all this match will not end 6-3 6-2 for any player because the conditions will allow Opelka to dominate on his serve. Unless he has some terrible day serving we should see a couple of tiebreaks here. Korda will be coming off of a deep run in Estoril and he might be tired looking to shorten points as well.

Opelka generally hates playing long rallies so this should be short and sweet. Obviously, the play depending on the line will be the over as I don’t see a match with many breaks. Ideally, I think Korda should have the advantage here because I could see him steal a few points in a tiebreak.

However, the fatigue factor is one to consider as well especially if the American reaches the final in Estoril. So to summarise, the over is the safest play,  I think Korda should win unless his fatigue prevents him from doing so and you be careful with whatever you choose.
