Azarenka Fights Back to Beat Zidansek

Victoria Azarenka fought back from a set down to oust Tamara Zidansek in the second round of the Madrid Open on Saturday.

The Belarusian, who was playing for the first time since her third round retirement against Linda Fruhvirtova in the Miami Open, needed two hours and 20 minutes to beat the Slovenian 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.

The two-time Madrid Open finalist had a slow start, losing the first four games of the match, before pulling a break back. But she couldn’t break again in the first set, handing Zidansek the lead.

Azarenka took charge of the match from the second set. She broke twice in the second to force the decider and then broke Zidansek thrice in the third set, while losing serve just once.

The 21-time tour level champion had begun the tournament with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 win over Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic on Thursday.

This is the first time since the Australian Open when the World no. 17 has won consecutive matches this season.

She is now one win away from reaching a second quarterfinal this season, having reached that far in Adelaide-1 earlier. She is also looking to reach a third quarterfinal in Madrid, having finished runner-up in 2011 and 2012.

Anisimova Rebounds Against Martic

For the second straight match, Amanda Anisimova needed three sets to beat her opponent and advance in the tournament.

The World No. 33, who won the Melbourne Summer set 2 title earlier this season, failed to convert three break points in the first set, while losing the only one she faced to fall a set behind Petra Martic.

But she made a solid comeback in the contest, saving all five break points and converting all three over the next two sets to clinch the contest 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in just over two hours.

The 20-year-old had beaten the third seed Aryna Sabalenka 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 in the first round.

With the win, Anisimova improved 16-6 for the season. She is 6-1 on clay having reached the semifinals of the Charleston Open.

Azarenka v Anisimova Prediction and Tip

Both players are looking in good touch and both put up gritty performances in the first two rounds, particularly in the second rounds, where they scored comeback wins. They will be bracing for another three setter on Monday, with Azarenka expected to edge through.
