Alexandrova Overcomes Parrizas-Diaz

World no. 45 Ekaterina Alexandrova continued her winning run in Madrid to advance to the Round of 16 on Saturday.

The Russian qualifier, who topped 10th seed Jelena Ostapenko in the first round on Thursday, needed an hour and 30 minutes to beat Spain’s Nuria Parrizas-Diaz 6-4. 7-5.

Alexandrova won 85% points on the first serve, converted four of seven break points and saved three of five to send the World No. 52 packing.

The Russian had taken three sets to beat the World no. 12 Ostapenko 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in the first round.

Alexandrova’s recent form has been pretty good. The Charleston Open semifinalist qualified for the main draw with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Germany’s Tamara Korpatsch in the first qualifier and a 6-1, 6-1 drubbing of France’s Clara Burel in the second qualifying round.

Bouzkova Rallies Past Yastremska

Marie Bouzkova’s march in Madrid continued as she recorded a solid comeback win over Dayana Yastremska in the second round on Saturday.

The 23-year-old Czech player made a sluggish start losing the first three games of the match, which eventually cost her the first set. The second set saw both players trade two breaks each before Bouzkova dominated the tiebreak to force the decider.

With the second set in the bag, Bouzkova took charge of the match, flying past the Ukrainian with three breaks of serves to win the match 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 in two hours and 36 minutes.

Buzkova converted five of 13 break points and saved two of five that she faced.

In the first round, Bouzkova had upset the fifth seed Karolina Pliskova 6-4, 7-5. She had also won the qualifying rounds in straight sets, beating Fiona Ferro 6-2, 6-2 and Danka Kovinic 7-5, 6-4.

Saturday’s win improves Bouzkova to 21-7 from all matches, including qualifying rounds.

Bouzkova is a three-time finalist on the tour, reaching her third WTA final in Guadalajara earlier this year. She was also a quarterfinalist in Monterrey.

The World No. 77 had a poor record on clay so far, coming into the tournament with a 2-10 record on the surface in the main draws.
